Beatriz Cortez (b. 1970, El Salvador) is an artist and writer. Cortez has lived in the United States since 1989. Through her work, she imagines possible futures and explores simultaneity—existence in different temporalities and versions of modernity—in relation to memory and loss in the aftermath of war and immigration. Cortez holds an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts and a doctorate in Latin American literature from Arizona State University. She has exhibited in Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and internationally in Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
